Reduce College Costs - Painlessly
When you have to write a five figure check each year for your child’s college education, it may seem futile to look for ways to cut corners or shave some costs here and there on many of the expenses incurred during the school year. But, you would be amazed at how all of the “incidentals” can add up. Here are some of the ways you could easily cut your expenses by four figures:
- Buy used textbooks, or consider "renting." Some services allow rentals on core curriculum textbooks, saving 60 to 80% on textbooks costs. Just be sure to check to see that the current text book being used in your class hasn’t been changed or doesn’t include different or additional assignments.
- Buy an inexpensive or refurbished laptop or desktop computer; unless you have, for example, a child enrolled in an engineering program, word processing, spreadsheets and internet access is all they will need.
- Buy an inexpensive inkjet printer that can utilize refilled cartridges, or have your student use the campus computer lab for printing.
- Choose the right meal plan. Many students never use all the meals available (sleeping late equals missed breakfasts.) Choose a plan that cuts costs while ensuring your student won't go hungry.
